The Energy and Renewable Energies Technology Center (ERETC) is one of scientific and research centers in the University of Technology/Iraq, which aims at contributing to support the scientific and advance researches, and developments in the country through the establishment and completion of research publications, advance and pioneer projects in the field of renewable and non-renewable energy, which is in the interest on the national economy and to achieve the goals of development plans.

Moreover, ERETC aims at spreading of the culture of using renewable energy as a clean energy and friendly environment through awareness of the usefulness of solar and wind energy systems in the preservation of the environment from pollution.

A patent for Dr. Mohammed A. Fayad

Dr. Mohammed A. Fayad from our center granted a patent from Central Organization for Standardization and Quality/Ministry of Planning under No. 6178 on 12/2/2020 within the classification F01N13/08 entitled:

A new method to analysis the physical and nanostructure properties of particulate matter (PM) emitted from diesel engine

Our invention relates to find a new method to analysis the physical [number (npo), diameter (dpo), radius of gyration (Rg) and fractal dimension Df)] and nanostructure (interlayer spacing (d002) and the thickness (Lc) and width (La) of the graphene layer) properties of particulate matter (PM) by using two high resolution equipment. Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) and High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) were used to analyses the PM and then subsequent with Matlab code (Digital image process) to evaluate the collected sample from the exhaust gas of actual diesel engine which operated by conventional diesel fuel and renewable fuels (biodiesel and butanol blend). The PM was analysed under different exhaust temperatures between 100 °C to 500 °C. The current method helps to understanding the physical and nanostructure of particulate matter which gives an insight and best understanding of physical and nanostructure properties of PM to reduce and control effect of these emissions on human health and environment. Furthermore, study impact of renewable fuels on improving the combustion performance and reduce the harmful emissions.

Prof. Miqdam Tariq Chaichan director of Energy and Renewable Energies Technology Center at university of Technology/Baghdad has published a scientific article that entitled

“Evaluation and comparison of different flow configurations PVT systems in Oman: a numerical and experimental investigation

The article was published in Elsevier-Journal of Solar Energy (Scopus), Vol. 208 / 15 September 2020 with IF = 4.608

Summary about the research:

The present research work was evaluated three photovoltaic/thermal (PVT) systems with three variable collectors’ types (Direct, Web and Spiral) under Desertec climatic conditions and variable coolant mass flow rates. The aim behind doing so is to explore PVT systems suitable for Oman and GCC countries. Also, the present study had an insight on, the hybrid PVT design that is developed to estimate the electrical and thermal performance both on residential and commercial purposes. The focus is on the electrical performance variables such as current, voltage, power, and efficiency. However, the effect of temperature on the inlet, outlet, and solar cell for the three systems was investigated too and compared with conventional PV. Thus, numerical and experimental verification was done to compare the three PVT collectors. Finally, the numerical and experimental results of the studied systems were compared with the results of other studies published in the literature.
